Crafting in Path of Exile has always had that strange pub-bet feeling to it. You know the item is good. You know touching it might ruin your mood for the night. Still, you click the orb because maybe, just maybe, it lands the one mod you need. That's why the Greater Exalted Orb in Path of Exile 2 feels like such a big deal. It changes how players think about risk, value, and PoE 2 Currency without turning crafting into a plain checklist. There's still tension. There's still that little pause before the slam. But it doesn't feel quite so much like tossing your best item off a cliff.

The old Exalted Orb was famous for being both exciting and cruel. It could finish an item, or it could add something so useless you'd rather pretend the craft never happened. Players laughed about it, sure, but mostly because there wasn't much else to do. The Greater Exalted Orb seems built around a different idea. Instead of pulling from the whole messy pool with no mercy, it leans toward stronger outcomes. That doesn't mean every result will be perfect. It shouldn't. But it gives the player a reason to believe the attempt is worth making, especially on gear that's already close to being great.

What I like about this system is the space between cheap crafting and endgame obsession. Not every item deserves the best currency you own. Sometimes you're fixing a decent pair of boots. Sometimes you're trying to push a weapon into serious bossing territory. Having Standard, Greater, and Perfect versions of an Exalted Orb gives players a natural ladder to climb. You can match the tool to the item, instead of treating every slam like the same blind gamble. That's a small design change on paper, but in practice it makes crafting feel far less hostile.

There's also a market angle here, and it matters. In the first game, many players treated valuable orbs as trade tokens before they treated them as crafting tools. You'd hoard them, price things around them, and often buy completed gear rather than risk using them yourself. With the Greater Exalted Orb, the value is more closely tied to what it can actually do. That could push more people into crafting their own upgrades. Not everyone, of course. Trade will always be huge. But if a currency item feels practical instead of terrifying, players are much more likely to spend it on their own gear.

The Greater Exalted Orb says a lot about where Path of Exile 2 is headed. It doesn't remove luck, and that's important. The series needs those wild moments where one click changes everything. But it also recognises that players want some say in the process. A craft should feel risky, not stupid. If other systems follow the same thinking, the sequel could keep its sharp edge while being easier to enjoy day after day. Even classic chase items like the Divine Orb may end up feeling part of a healthier economy, where using currency is just as tempting as saving it.
